The Human Thing

One of my mom’s friends works as a nurse aid for a remarkable man. Intelligent and a dedicated circle of friends, also intelligent and but also successful. With a high spirit for life and hunger for what it has to offer, yet only in his 40ties he is bed-ridden and with need for assistance for any basic human thing. A degenerative muscular disorder caught up with him in his 30ties, and hasn’t left him alone since. The prognosis is not good, he would only get worse. And yet he has this passion for life and firm faith that he may get better. He starts sentences with “one day when I get better” or  “one day when I can walk”, and and dreams of what life would be when that happens. From what I have been told through the caretaker’s stories, he believes it with all of his soul. He has this unshakable faith and will to believe in good things happening for him, even when the odds are way against him. I’ve never met the man, but I have strong admiration for his delusional optimism.  Cause that’s what it is in the end, no? It takes a special kind of courage to have faith, when all of the odds are against you. Yet, I guess it is a very human thing…
